Mathematics is the mother of all sciences and relates to all fields of study. From Chemistry to Physics, and even the applications of Mathematics to poetry within Modern Languages, Mathematics is essential to all components of life. Being able to impart this knowledge of mathematics to young minds every day allows me to continually experience what I am most passionate about in life. My personal philosophy as a teacher has always been that education is about the experience and social utility. As a social constructivist, I believe that Mathematics is at the center of all social interactions. By pairing students and acknowledging the rate by which they are able to teach each other, I am able to encourage key critical thinking and social skills. Nowadays, teachers are not just knowledge providers. They are facilitators of growth, and my approach is to give them many diverse opportunities to explore and gain knowledge from a wide variety of different platforms and resources. Doing so means that students are able to engage with Mathematics with a level of freedom and a pace that suits their own individual needs. While teaching in the Maldives, I once had the pleasure of witnessing a student apply the principles of one of my lessons in real life, at a sports day event. During this lesson, I taught Projectile Motion. The student in question was attempting to win the school-wide shot-put contest and explained to me that he was going to win this despite being one of the physically weakest students. When asked how he would achieve this, he explained that if a projectile is thrown at an angle of 45 degrees it reaches the maximum horizontal length. He then went on to win the contest, exemplifying beautifully the undeniable relationship between Mathematics and reality.
