I thoroughly enjoyed my both BSc and MSc research projects in Biomedical Science and Neuroscience. I found biological processes fascinating, especially the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms and their significance in health and disease. Tutoring offers me the opportunity to share my passion for science and the skills developed throughout my studies. For example, strategies to understand complicated concepts and simplified and effective exam preparation techniques help other students thrive in and beyond their school exams.

Tutoring Approach

//------ Methodology for Maths, English, Science Subjects & entrance exam preparation ------//

Firstly, through small discussion, the student's needs, such as whether the student wants to focus on the course content, exam techniques or both, and learning style are communicated to ensure that the lessons are tailored. I will then prepare subsequent lessons based on the subject specification (outlines learning objectives that students need to know for their school/college assessments) and student's learning profile. I prepare the lessons in advance and deliver lessons via Zoom whiteboard space (i.e., showing Maths working or diagrams) and PowerPoint, which my student can see and engage throughout the lesson.

I start my lesson by introducing the topic and lesson objectives or learning targets. To keep the lesson interactive, I include diagrams and ask questions to improve my students' understanding of the material. The lesson is usually summed up with a summary of the main points covered in the lesson and the suggestion of relevant resources that might help to enhance my students' understanding of the topic. At the end of each session, I offer my students an opportunity to suggest topics of interest to be covered in the next lesson. This will help tailor the lesson to meet students' needs and targets so they gain as much as possible from each lesson.

I guide my students to use different revision strategies and tips to remember key facts within my lessons and encourage them to use active recall and spaced repetition to reinforce their learning. I encourage my students to ask questions to address any misunderstanding, focus and further practice on weaker areas to improve understanding and bridge any gaps in knowledge and skills to ace their exams. For example, when reading questions, pay attention to the command word in the question (i.e., how, explain, describe etc.), create a glossary of terms for each of the Science topics, including for the command words and communicate key practical terms such as reliable, error, accurate, quantitative data, dependent and continuous variables etc. As well as help my students develop transferable academic skills not covered in the school curriculum to succeed beyond school and college.

I teach my students using high-quality, up-to-date education content, including exam-style questions, mock tests and exclusive learning resources created by experts. Through regular assessments and tests covering exam board-specific learning content, i.e., entrance exam (Sutton, GL, CSSE, CEM, Kingston, SET, ISEB), Edexcel, AQA and others, developing exam skills and boosting confidence and assign further reading, practice and homework after each session to strengthen their knowledge and recap sessions to bridge any gaps in their understanding.

//------ Methodology for Urdu speaking and listening (Beginner-Advanced) ------//

The ultimate goal of learning any language is communication through written and verbal, and topics such as grammar and building vocabulary can help to achieve the goal.

I personalised my sessions according to my students' Urdu speaking and listening ability. My sessions include Urdu phrases broken down into syllabi and then used to create simple to complex sentences and conversational language using modifiable patterns, grammar and vocabulary to increase exposure and develop my student's confidence and ability to speak Urdu.

I encourage my students to speak Urdu, practice conversational phrases aloud and regularly test my student using tailored quizzes, including speaking and listening tests.

//------ Testimonials ------//

"Excellent tutor - Since Ume has been tutoring my daughter (for Year 11 GCSE Maths), her grade has gone from grade U to achieving grade B in one year. As a result of these sessions, my daughter is much more enthusiastic and motivated and looks forward to her sessions. She sets homework after each session, which helps to consolidate what she has learned. She also ensures to develop exam skills by doing regular tests and looking at past paper questions. I also get regular updates from Ume about my daughter's progress. Overall, Ume is very knowledgeable, and thorough and knows how to rekindle enthusiasm for the subject. I would highly recommend her as a tutor to anyone." Ms Ozgur Dilana, GCSE Maths Tuition

Update 2021-2022: "My daughter has achieved grade A in her final GCSE Maths." Ms Dilana, GCSE Maths Tuition

“Ume is preparing my home-schooling daughter for Chemistry, Biology and Physics GCSE exams. Ume is a very organised, consistent, and patient tutor. She builds good relationships with my daughter, she encourages her to be an active listener and ask questions, explains different ways if my daughter can't understand, gives her tests and quizzes. Ume organises meetings with parents to give them updates on my child's progress. Me and my daughter recommend Ume as a tutor to anyone who needs to pass GCSE Science successfully.” Mrs Larissa, GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths Tuition

“Ume is tutoring my daughter in GCSE Maths, Biology, Physics & Chemistry. After only a short time, Ume has really helped my daughter (age 14) to understand many areas of maths and science that she hadn't quite grasped. She is performing better at school and says that Ume is very clear and makes the subjects easier to understand. Ume is very thorough, always forwarding additional material that is really helpful. My daughter looks forward to her lessons.” Mrs Tracey, GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths Tuition

“Ume has proven to be a very professional and flexible tutor. She regularly reminds parents of classes, organises feedback sessions and set's a learning plan which is shared with parents a week before each tutoring session. Ume has also made changes to scheduled classes on short-notice which has been very much appreciated as it has enabled our eldest daughter to be flexible with her demands for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Ume currently teaches two of our three daughters and both of them have expressed great elation in having been introduced to their favourite tutor ever (they have had a few).” Mr Wilson, Year 8 Biology and Maths, and Urdu Language Tuition

“Ume is tutoring year 6 Maths to our son, who found Maths challenging but with Ume’s input and excellent approach in identifying the key areas through regular Maths assessments, teaching and then testing has definitely worked! His confidence has grown and now he is very enthusiastic to solve tricky Maths questions and challenges himself. This is exactly what we were looking for! We are pleased with our son’s progress and Ume’s encouraging teaching style. Our son is enjoying the lessons and looking forward to the coming lessons. We couldn’t recommend Ume highly enough and if you are reading this, then please look no further!” Mrs Annah, Year 6 Maths Tuition

“Ume is tutoring our son for the 11plus Maths exam and she obviously has a thorough understanding of the subject and the exam process. She puts a lot of effort into preparing the lesson and her lessons are outstanding, very well planned, organised and structured. Our son reported more confidence in understanding the subject and how to approach exam-style questions. She sets up regular exam-style mock tests to identify the areas where he needs more help, provides detailed feedback and updates his progress regularly. She does her best to personalise her teaching approach and the lessons learning material for our son, specifically targeting those areas which require improvement. She provides extra practice sheets for homework which is excellent and extremely helpful for exam preparation which can further strengthen our son’s understanding of the subject. My son is really enjoying her interactive and engaging lessons. We are extremely pleased with Ume’s teaching approach and the lessons and we look forward to continuing Maths lessons for our son. We would highly recommend Ume as a great tutor at any level. Thank you so much Ume, we are grateful for your utmost support.” Mrs Prashar, 11plus Tuition

“Ume promptly responds to my requests for scheduling tutoring sessions and thoroughly prepare all the teaching lessons. I feel very lucky to have found Ume at the right time. She is exceptionally organised, reliable and explains complicated topics clearly and in-depth to ensure that I understood each topic. She is patient, so I feel supported and encouraged throughout the lesson because of her personalised tutoring approach. I am extremely happy and enjoyed all of my seven lessons with her. I felt more confident after each lesson and I look forward to continuing my tutoring sessions with her. I have already recommended her to my friends and family! I would highly recommend Ume's excellent teaching ability and skills to anyone. Thank you so much, Ume!!” Mrs Shahzana, Urdu Language Tuition
“Ume is teaching our daughter KS3 higher Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Ume regularly tests our daughter using exam-style questions helping to develop exam skills, recap sessions and provides homework after class. Ume is very organised and updates us on our daughter's progress! We highly recommend Ume!” Mrs Sanjika, Year 8 Physics, Biology and Chemistry Tuition

“Ume is an excellent tutor. My daughter does not particularly enjoy studying. However, she does enjoy the lessons with Ume. She is very prepared, thorough and has high attention to detail which is essential to ensure understanding. I am confident that her grades will improve with Ume. She is building the confidence of my daughter in both GCSE maths and physics.” Ms Jo, GCSE Physics and Maths Tuition

"My daughter has been working with Ume, twice weekly for 6 weeks now. Ume was recommended to us by a friend, and we plan to continue employing Ume for the foreseeable future. She tutors my daughter in Physics and Biology.
My daughter is in year 10 and had considerable gaps in her scientific knowledge due to several years living overseas and large amounts of remote learning in her first year back in the UK system. She had lost all confidence and was disengaged with her lessons at school.

Ume took on board our situation and created lessons that were appropriate to my daughter’s specific needs. She set appropriate goals for the term, so my daughter could feel that she was working towards a meaningful target. Her lessons have clear objectives, are well planned, follow the appropriate GCSE curriculum and I receive regular feedback. She also sends follow-up links after each session to consolidate the learning done during the session.
My daughter was initially reluctant to engage with tutoring, but even she has recognised the value of the sessions and logs on for each session without complaining! She has rated Ume as a 5 star tutor.

We immediately noted a change in my daughter's attitude towards her science lessons at school. She is far more confident and as she now understands what is being taught in school, she is far more engaged with her school work.
I would thoroughly recommend Ume to all parents. We feel so lucky to have found her." Ms Daisy Harman, GCSE Physics and Biology Tuition

“It's been 3 weeks since Ume is remote teaching my daughter GCSE level Physics, Maths and Biology. Lessons are organised and planned, and in particular, I like the way she explains concepts. Uma is professional and provides updates highlighting teaching progress. My daughter has expressed positive feedback to me about Ume

At this stage, I am happy to recommend Ume to others for her teaching style and professionalism.
