The approach that you would most see me follow is the "MDAD Approach" wherein I begin with Modelling a new concept, followed by Displaying it on paper as to how it's done. Once the student has seen me Model and Display the technique, it is now time for them to work on the Application part which is then followed by Drill. By doing Drills, the students get to practice the new concepts learnt and to develop consistency.
