I try to create an environment in which they are free to voice out their opinions and concerns, knowing that I will listen intently. I like to get to know my students on a more personable level through friendly questions. I tend to ask them about their pet, how they spent their evening after school or what is the plan for the day. This not only allows me to understand them better, but also ensures that my students feel more comfortable around me, which in turn allows them to speak to me more freely about issues they are facing, be it academically or personally. I encourage them to express their opinions about a task we are doing in class. For example when planning for a class assembly or oraganising for a class party I ask them to come up with their ideas. We list down all the ideas on the board. We then vote and choose the best possible option. This makes them feel that their opinions are valued.
During lessons I make sure that each student gets an opportunity to share their perspectives on the topic being discussed, so that they feel heard, valued and they feel that the environment they are in is safe. It is important to give individual feedback to students. However it is equally important for me to receive a feedback from my students. At the end of each lesson I give them an exit ticket to fill up. It’s a feedback that I receive to improve the teaching and learning process. Through this I learnt that my students enjoy project-based activities. I learnt that they love working in groups and doing presentations in class. I have learnt that they think that my source-based questions are hard for them. I learnt that uploading all tasks on satchel (learning platform used in school) helps to remind them about all the upcoming submissions and they can communicate with me to clear their doubts. They suggest topics that they think I should repeat/approach differently. This helps me to plan for my future lessons.
