Hi dear students! I have been very passionate about my mother tongue, Telugu, since my childhood. I like teaching students to speak, read, and write Telugu. I am a freelance writer and have published many Telugu articles, short stories, and more in leading newspapers and magazines. I try to make the classes interesting by including rhymes, poems, and songs and providing definitions for those along with each lesson so that they can master the language while having fun. Not only do I teach the words, but I try to show them what those words mean. For example, I show them pictures and real items at home, like groceries. I try to give them some fun activities and assignments with each lesson to make the learning easy and fast. I start with the Telugu alphabet, and step by step, we learn words, numbers, weekdays, months, animals, birds, and many more interesting things. As I start to teach grammar, I make them use it in everyday speaking, reading and writing. I speak Telugu with my students and encourage them to speak in Telugu as much as possible at home with the parents and siblings, as well. My freelancing experience also makes me uniquely capable in helping children and adults, alike, with any Telugu writing.

Experience

  • Telugu/Hindi Tutor (Jul, 1997Present) at At Home Tuitions
I have been tutoring elementary and middle school students Telugu since 1997 on and off. I teach them how to read and write step by step starting with the Telugu alphabet. I encourage them to speak in Telugu at home. I teach them easy words and sentences to use in conversation with family members and friends. In addition, I teach them interesting rhymes, poems, and songs so that they can practice the language through those. I teach them the meaning of all the words in those rhymes, poems, and songs, increasing their Telugu vocabulary. In each class, I give the students some homework with interesting and fun activities to give them a chance to practice whatever they learn in the class. When they are competent with the alphabet, I introduce grammar to help them read and write. Every few weeks I review previous lessons with dictation of words, sentences, fun quizzes, and more. I have taught students online, as well, following the same methods. If the students are only learning to speak instead of also reading and writing, I begin teaching grammar earlier so they are able to speak correctly. I enjoy teaching Telugu and believe that learning the mother tongue is very important. It connects people speaking Telugu all around the world, and by teaching children, we are preserving it. Telugu, sometimes known as the "Italian of the East," is one of the most beautiful languages in the world, and children deserve to be taught such a wonderful language.

Durga is the best!

I have been working with her on conversational Telugu with Durga twice a week since May and very much enjoy our sessions. It is a tough language to pick up as a native English speaker and Durga is always so kind and picks up very quickly on how best to approach you as a student. She is incredibly patient, thoughtful and a genuinely lovely person. I work full-time and she always is flexible and finds a time to have a lesson time that works. I look forward to my sessions with her each week and will continue for the foreseeable future!

I HIGHLY recommend Durga and feel very fortunate to have found her. Dhanyavadalu, Durga!
