Teaching is the heart of the matter — a process of transforming students and professors into persons possessing knowledge, wisdom, critical reason, and moral judgment, all proved in the life of care for others. Teaching is forming relationships with students, as we discover new ways of life and being in the world.
And I think I'm a firm believer in engaged learning, and my classes reflect that - I understand the value of theory, but theory without application is an empty exercise.
Taking the time to get to know every student, finding out how each student learns, and giving them the tools they need to successfully progress through levels of development are the ways I exhibit my philosophy of supportive, constructive teaching. I aim to gain my students' trust, not only as a theatre professional, but also as a mentor.
I know that we cannot teach our students unless they are willing to be taught. I also know that they are most willing when they feel what they are learning will be relevant to their goals. I take pride in making the freshman writing course an important part of how students recognize the utility of writing in their lives.
