INVESTIGATING THE USE OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES FOR TRAFFIC ENGINEERING STUDIES IN SRI LANKA

1. Summary of work to be done

1.1 Aim
To determine and present the optimal methods, and procedures for using UAVs to aid traffic engineering studies and estimate traffic parameters in Sri Lanka.

1.1 Objectives
1. To identify the categories of traffic engineering studies that can be aided with a UAV
2. To explore the methods in which data has been collected from UAVs for traffic engineering studies for determining traffic parameters.
3. To evaluate the suitability and effectiveness of such methods for Sri Lankan traffic engineering studies.

1.2 Scope
UAVs have been utilized in a wide array of traffic engineering fields. However, in this paper is limited to UAV-based parameter estimation in traffic volume studies, traffic flow characteristics studies, accident and road safety studies and intersection studies.
