ESSAYS Answer two (2) questions from each group for a total of two essays. Each essay will require at least five paragraphs to answer fully.

An outline and FULL essay with an argument/thesis and cited facts that are explained AND support your idea are required. Extra points for a good counterargument and redefend. Compare (same) and contrast (different) questions do not require a counterargument. Only use the syllabus and lectures for sources and cite everything with either parenthetical citations or footnotes. YOU MUST CITE YOUR SOURCES FOR EVERYTHING

Group 1

Was Franklin Delano Roosevelt a good President? Describe at least two each of his high points and two low points of his presidency. Be detailed, citing everything relevant. The second part of this question is why is he considered by many to be the most historically significant president of the century? Be sure to cover both the Depression and WWII.

What was the Cold War, and how did it transform American society? Be sure to include Keynesian economics and Reagan. “

Why did many people consider the Vietnam War a “Bad war, and how did it change society?

Group 2

Why do many scholars call the mid-20th century civil rights movement the Second Reconstruction or finishing the Reconstruction? The second part of this question is how Brother Malcolm X and the Black Panthers fit in all of this? Meaning, do not give me an MLK CENTRIC ANSWER. He was a significant part but is not the only factor.

Tie in the lecture on Indian removal in 1877 and our reading “The Killing of Crazy Horse” with the Red Power Movement of the 20th century. Be sure to compare Wounded Knee I and II.

Tie the first part of the semester to the second and explain the persistence of Jewish people being considered less than entirely White?

What were the major issues facing women when the course started? Explain how these issues changed throughout the course. How was Ruth Bader Ginsburg able to change laws that discriminated “on the basis of sex.”

Bonus Question 10 extra points

Why and how did WWI happen, and what were the outcomes? (Three-part question! Give two facts supporting your argument for each part of this question. Offer a counterargument and redefend if you can.)

Compare Peter Jamero’s agricultural work experiences with Tomás Rivera. What do we learn about the formation of Asian political power from Jamero’s book versus the more Japanese-led efforts of Korematsu and Kochiyama? How does it differ from Chicano Power and Chicano identity politics? (Only answer this question if you read most of both books.)
